Water Hyacinth

The 2016 Aquila Water Hyacinth Project has now concluded.

We welcome the Serpentine/Jarrahdale Landcare group to our Friends of the Fitzroy website to join the Aquila Search for water hyacinth. The Department of Agriculture and Food (WA) has asked us to host the Water Hyacinth Aquila Project to detect water hyacinth on the Serpentine River. Please first check out the Aquila Project.

Floating water hyacinth, (Eichhornia crassipes) has invaded parts of the Serpentine River and is a declared pest in Western Australia (WA). Under WA legislation it is assigned – Eradication category. This weed has the potential to block large sections of the river and spread into other waterways. We must stop it before it becomes unstoppable.

Aerial images of the river, taken a fixed wing drone, are presented over the Internet so volunteers can search those images and locate this invasive aquatic weed. We have approximately 8000 images to search so please join Team Aquila to help us complete the project. Those images, which are marked the team as containing water hyacinth, will be located on the river and the plants destroyed. This work is part of the Boosting Biosecurity Defences Agricultural Weed Surveillance Project, funded Royalties for Regions (For further information see: https://agric.wa.gov.au/n/3835).
